The Data Science and its Applications research department (based in Kaiserslautern or Berlin) is looking to expand its team with several (Junior or Senior) Researchers in data science.

Your tasks

In particular, we’d be delighted to talk, if you think you could help drive one of the following research projects in event modelling, personalised medicine and trustworthy AI:

Timely models for individual and societal health: “Eventful” is a project developing new methods for effective modelling of spatio-temporal processes, with applications in crisis prediction and prevention and geopolitics. You will help build standardised frameworks for preparation and evaluation of models for longitudinal survey data, patient trajectories and socio-political processes in noisy or high-dimensional settings.

Reducing patient burden and research cost: the AI4Nof1 project leverages cutting edge developments in (causal, neurosymbolic) reinforcement learning, psychometrics and digital epidemiology to build adaptive personalised treatment regimes for chronic conditions, simultaneously identifying phenotypes and causal pathways while minimising the time and number of measurements needed for patients to find a treatment that is right for them.

The TrustifAI project aims to contribute a set of concrete solutions to improve trustworthiness of AI applications in health and wellbeing at various stages of development lifecycle. A quality platform for development of trustworthy AI applications will enable users to create efficient and effective data science analytics pipelines through a human-in-the-loop approach with the goal of increasing trustworthiness.

Visit our web site for further information about ongoing research projects.

Your qualifications

For all our research projects, we aim to deliver open-source tools and packages and some aspects therefore demand more of a research software engineering focus. Thus, in addition to researchers, we would also consider strong engineers with experience working in a research environment.

You should have a quantitative background (e.g. statistics, machine learning, bioinformatics, computer science or data science)—and a keenness to contribute to exciting projects making a real impact in medical research, epidemiology and reproducible science for social good.

If you are proactive and capable, we’d like to hear from you.

The minimum qualification for Junior Researcher, Researcher and Senior Researcher levels are, respectively, a BSc, MSc and PhD in a relevant subject.

You should have good communication skills in English.

In your cover letter, please include a statement of purpose explaining how you envisage contributing to a specific research project, drawing on existing knowledge of available theory, methodologies, workflows, datasets and/or tools. This helps identify which topic(s) or task(s) are the best match.

Your benefits

  • Collaboration on high-impact projects in a diverse and motivated international and multidisciplinary team
  • Work on highly topical scientific and social issues. Help shape research topics, develop application-orientated technologies and put them into practice.
  • Expand your expertise in pioneering areas
  • A technically demanding, innovative and professional working environment at one of the outstanding IT locations in Germany
  • Competitive remuneration and social benefits
  • Excellent network with outstanding contacts in industry and academia
  • Flexible working hours with option to work in the office or from home

Salaries depend on personal experience and circumstance, we are able to offer a competitive salary for the German research landscape and are well regarded as an employer. In particular, in our department we focus on providing a great working environment for our diverse team.
