As part of the development of the new research area "Data Science", with application focus on life science and social good under the future direction of Prof. Dr. Sebastian Vollmer at the DFKI Kaiserslautern we seek to employ a

Research Department Manager/ Scientific Manager (m / f / d)

(full-time, initially limited to 2 years - possible extended term). Part-time possible with or without additional resarch position. 

The research area is directed by Prof. Dr. Sebastian Vollmer, and has an application focus on life science and social good projects in government and third sector.

Your tasks

  • Writing, supporting and supervising grant applications, business cases, proposals, and publications, acquisition of industry contacts
  • Support in the coordination of the Data Science team and the associated group at the TU Kaiserslautern including project controlling and management
  • Communication within the group and externally with research partners and beyond
  • Help create overall program strategy, build and maintain programs and partnerships with industry, governments and non-profits, and manage collaborative projects.
  • Support and oversight of a 12-week summer programme, that aims to train top talent in Data Science to tackle problems with social impact, and deliver operational solutions to non-profit organisations and government
  • Establishment of training and delivery short term sprints activities with industry, government and non-profits.

Your qualifications

  • MSc in Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, Economics or a related discipline
  • knowledge of and interest in data science and ML
  • Experience writing research proposals and / or business cases 
  • Structured and organized work
  • Excellent problem-solving ability, in particular in supporting organizational tasks in research
  • Good understanding of the financing processes of universities and third-party funding providers
  • Interest in the establishment and management of a new area in the range of  initially 15 scientists
  • Excellent communication and excellent command of German and English, both spoken and written

  • Experience with consulting / company advice     
  • Experience in commercial / industrial research labs      
  • Experience with project management (Agile / Scrum) using tools such as Trello         
  • Experience in implementation of data projects into practice
  • Experience working with industry, government and / or nonprofits, leading / managing teams, and familiarity with data analysis         
  • Experience with Github and open source projects         
  • Experience in organizing hackathons
