The Data Science and its Applications research department is looking to expand its team with several student research assistants (HiWis) contributing to our current research topics. Initial employment will be for 3 months with the possibility of extension. For suitable candidates we offer the possibility to write their bachelor's or master's thesis in our department.

Your tasks

As part of the Data Science and its Applications group, you will contribute to one or more of our research projects, including in the areas of personalized medicine, bioinformatics, spatiotemporal event modeling, trustworthy AI, and knowledge-intensive machine learning.

Your tasks will include one or more of the following:

  • Collaborate with our team of data scientists to develop reproducible and extensible data science workflows leveraging prior knowledge and information from heterogeneous data sources
  • Conduct research to accelerate the scientific discovery process through efficient implementation and comparison of data analysis pipelines
  • Critically assess the availability and accessibility of useful datasets from open databases and large biobanks
  • Assist in the development of tools and frameworks for modeling, integrating or extracting knowledge from various sources
  • Exploring the challenges and opportunities of various methods from the scientific literature

Your qualifications

  • Demonstrable interest in and understanding of data science, machine learning, statistical modelling or scientific reproducibility
  • Proficiency in Python, including frameworks such as PyTorch
  • Familiarity with machine learning concepts, e.g. active learning, reinforcement learning, transfer learning
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and ability to work independently
  • Good communication skills in English
